Identify authority and destinations

Confirm who may direct the move and which items go to heirs, another residence, storage, an auction house, a conservator, donation, or disposal. Use unique labels for each destination.

Document before handling

Photograph important pieces, existing condition, maker marks, serial numbers, and labels. Keep appraisals and ownership records separate from the shipment. Use an inventory that follows each item or container.

Scope specialty work separately

Art, antiques, sculpture, chandeliers, wine, stone, glass, clocks, pianos, and custom furniture may require crating, climate planning, rigging, or specialist disassembly. Put the method and responsibility in writing.

Verify protection using examples

Ask how the selected valuation would respond to damage, loss, a pair or set, and an item whose market value exceeds ordinary household goods. Check whether separate insurance or declared-value documentation is needed.

Maintain chain of custody

Record pickup, container or crate identification, storage location, transfers, delivery recipient, and final condition. Limit last-minute verbal changes and confirm them in writing with the authorized decision-maker.
